Irving Roth was a young teenager in 1944 when he was sent to Auschwitz; and then forced onto a death march to Buchenwald. Later in life he became the Director of the Holocaust Resource Centre in New York. Over the years he shared much about his experiences during the Holocaust. He was once quoted: “How is it possible in the 20th century, people would elect a government where one of their major missions was the destruction of its citizens, or a particular group of citizens? … how the general public accepted it and effectively voted them into power in 1932. To understand that process is important. And as soon as that happened, there were what I call signposts along the road to Auschwitz … step by step, the oppression gets bigger and bigger and bigger, and no one seems to care.” (Taken from an interview with a High School newspaper in Lynbrook, NY.)
Why do I share this? Sunday morning I was scrolling through the plethora of headlines found on internet news sites. I am an equal opportunity “scroller” in that I will visit a variety of sites: liberal, conservative, Christian, foreign (i.e. BBC or Israel365), etc. On this particular morning I found myself doubling back to a headline I saw on Fox News: “Rachel Levine says pediatricians all agree on importance of ‘gender-affirming care’ for children”.
For those who might not know who Rachel Levine is – Levine is the Assistant Secretary of Health and the highest ranking transgender person in the US government. In the short article was a quote made to NPR: “There is no argument among medical professionals – pediatricians, pediatric endocrinologists, adolescent medicine physicians, adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, etc. – about the value and the importance of gender-affirming care.” According to the fact sheet from the Office of Population Affairs which is under the umbrella of Department of Health & Human Services, gender-affirming care includes social affirmation at any age, puberty blockers during puberty and hormone therapy starting during early adolescence. I’ve included a link to the fact sheet below. While there, please pray about this issue and click on the “I Prayed” button.
So, how in the world did we get here? I go back to Mr. Roth’s words, “step by step, oppression gets bigger and bigger, and no one seems to care”. Another quote attributed to Mr. Roth and referring to the Holocaust, “Ordinary, God-fearing, church-going people became mass murderers. It’s inconceivable! It happens very simply through propaganda…….” The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines propaganda in part as: the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person; or, ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause. Do we see the use of propaganda in our country today? Oh, the power of words!
How has our society and the things we hold true and right and honorable gotten so far away from biblical truths which have withstood the test of time for generations, for millennia? Granted every generation throughout the course of history has struggled between right and wrong in their beliefs, ethics and morals. And yet it appears the speed at which we are descending into chaos of thought and ideas is becoming exponential. If we, as believers, are not willing to take a stand, to speak forth sound biblical truth, to pray, then what are we leaving to the next generation? The following poem shows better what I am trying to convey.
Friedrich Niemöller was a German theologian and a Lutheran pastor, and was in opposition to the Nazi government. He wrote this poem:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.
When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.
We are not dealing with the horrors of WW2. We face a greater enemy. An enemy that is coming for our thoughts and beliefs. We see the truths of Isaiah 5:20-21 before us every day. Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. We see mindsets being promoted that would have been unheard of 20+ years ago. We would have said – that’s impossible, no one thinks like that! And decisions are being made that are completely contrary to what the Bible tell us. If those who call Jesus/Yeshua Lord do not stand up for God’s truths, who will?
What are the next steps – I don’t know. However, when the Lord brings things to mind,
