Maintaining our Republic

But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood”.

Ezekiel 33:6

This weekend I was at an event where Rafael Polo, a Cuban immigrant and author of Growing up American, spoke about escaping Castro’s Cuba as a 9 year old. He told how a change in government drove a free, relatively prosperous nation into dire poverty overnight.

Fidel Castro came to power in 1959 in a revolution that ousted Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. After gaining power many associated with Batista were imprisoned and executed by Castro’s revolutionaries. The Constitution was eliminated, private property and civil rights were taken away. The government took control of the media and all industry. Though Castro promised free elections, they never occurred. Today they have one party rule and the shame elections they do have are controlled by the communist party.

Elections that are free from manipulation and fraud are key to a free society. As we speak, our US Senate is about to vote on HR 1, erroneously called, “For the People Act”. This legislation takes away states’ rights to run our own elections. Even the ACLU calls it an attack on free speech. The elimination of voter identification opens Pandora’s Box for voter fraud. Federal bureaucrats will control redistricting. Your 16 year old, who is still your dependent, will automatically be registered to vote. I can go on and on how bad this legislation is. Total federal control is the last thing we need in preserving free and open elections.

The only thing stopping HR 1 from becoming law is the filibuster that requires 60 votes in the Senate for passage. Please thank Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema for her stance on keeping the filibuster in place. Her lone vote is crucial.
Throughout history, those who have attempted a utopian society through Marxism have experienced disastrous consequences. We must be the watchmen on the wall and sound the alarm when we see our God given freedoms slipping away. We must pray for God’s guidance as we do our best in maintaining our republic.
