Is God’s Word True, Real or False?
By Mark Harris
Are you as amazed as I am how a seemingly small minority of Americans and non-Americans are radically changing the foundations of the United States in such a short time?
Maybe I don’t have a large circle of friends and acquaintances, but the majority of people I know don’t agree with what is happening in our country. I do hear, “How do we really know if what we hear in the news is true or false?”
In his book, Sharper Strokes, Harold Bullock writes,
“Americans tend to have a peculiar view of reality. They tend to sort FACTS into three categories: TRUE, REAL & FALSE.”
FACTS that we feel are true, but which do not have any real practical impact or consequence for our lives, we affirm to be TRUE.
Example: The fact the world is 25,000 miles around is true, but has no impact on our daily lives.
FACTS that we feel are not only true but also have real practical consequences in our daily lives, we affirm to be REAL.
Example: Gravity we believe is real. It impacts our decisions, “I’m not going up there, I might fall.”
Facts we consider REAL are the ones that impact our daily decisions and GUIDE OUR LIVES.
FACTS that we feel are not true we affirm to be FALSE.
Example: There is a God.
Most Americans, including ‘born-again Christians’, tend to put God and God’s word in the ‘true but not real’ category.
“Christians may affirm the truth of scripture or even argue vehemently about its truth, but they really don’t bother with specific obedience to God’s word in most situations of daily life,” says Bullock.
Are the following passages in the Bible TRUE or REAL to you?
"Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You parents – if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him."Matthew 7:7-11 (NLT)
Do you act and make decisions on the FACT that God wants to bless you when you ask Him? Is that promise True or Real to you?
"Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."Romans 12:2 (NLT)
"Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that some of you don't know God at all."1Corinthians 15:34 (NLT)
When these passages are REAL you will allow God to transform the way you think and act. Is this promise TRUE or REAL?
"But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins."Luke 6:49 (NLT)
"Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them."John 14:21 (NLT)
When these passages are REAL you will read God’s word daily and obey what you read. Is this promise TRUE or REAL?
"Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think."Ephesians 3:20 (NLT)
"I have come that you might have LIFE, and have it to the FULLEST!"John 10:10 (NLT)
When these passages are REAL you will expect God to work in your life as a normal part of your life. Is this promise TRUE or REAL to you?
KEY: When you read the Bible and make decisions each day, you need to ask yourself, “Do I believe what I know the Bible says is really REAL and how does it impact how I make decisions?
Those of us who are praying for God to turn our city’s heart back to Him must understand what we are asking Him to do.
We are asking God to turn our hearts back to Him, we are asking Him to make His word “REAL” in the lives of our citizens.
Because scripture is true but not real to most Americans, it will have little impact on their daily decision making process.
Only when God’s word moves from being true to being real will it have a significant impact on the decision making process of our citizens and leaders.
Why is God and His word true but not real in the lives of most Christians?
Several people admit to me that they really don’t expect God answer their prayers.
If God’s word is it real why would we not expect Him to answer when we pray?
Do you really believe that God wants to do good things in your life?
Do you really believe that God will answer your prayers when you ask?
If you do not see God significantly working in your life more than that of the people in the non-believing public, then God and His word may be true to you, but it has not become real.
In the radically changing world around us, people are desperately wanting to know if God is “real” not just “true” in the lives of Christians. What message are they receiving from you?
