Governor Ducey Signs Important Bills
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ”.
Governor Ducey welcomed your calls of encouragement last week to sign 3 important bills into law. SB 1165 - save women’s sports, SB 1138 - no gender reassignment surgery under 18 years of age and SB 1164 - no abortion after 15 week gestation are now the law of the land.
Gender dysphoria is a real psychological medical condition. As Christians, we should show love and compassion towards these individuals and pray that with God’s help, they overcome the anguish caused by this psychological distress. Over recent years, the number of people identifying as transgender, especially in children, has risen faster than the spread of corona virus.
On March 31, 2022, President Biden commemorated Transgender Day. He proclaimed that his administration is standing up to bills being passed by state legislatures that are anti-transgender. President Biden went on to say: “This administration is standing up for you against all these hateful bills and we’re committed to advancing transgender equality in the classroom, on the playing field, in our military and our housing and health care system”.
Why has there been a hockey stick rise in the number of children identifying as transgender? We have seen the phenomena of one child identifying as transgender and then many of their friends following suit by proclaiming they too are transgender. We know kids can be groomed to accept many ideologies. Could we be encouraging children to identify as transgender by wide spread affirmation in the classroom? Is the answer allowing biological men with an unfair physical advantage over women to compete in women’s sports? I don’t think so and neither did our Arizona Legislature and Governor. SB 1165 puts an end to it.
In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, gender dysphoria has a separate specific criteria for children, adolescents and adults. An adult can go to a therapist and seek philological treatment. In Pima County it’s against the law for a licensed therapist to counsel a child who is sexually confused. Pima County calls it “Conversion Therapy” and forbids a parent from seeking help for their child addressing sexual orientation or gender identity. This type legislation is spreading throughout the country and there is a bill, SB 1511, in the Arizona Legislature aimed to outlaw sexual orientation and gender identity counseling statewide.
Now let’s look at treatment for gender dysphoria. We know the psychiatric community is being chilled from treating children with gender dysphoria with psychological therapy, so the next step is to cut out the problem. It’s easier to find a surgeon who will alter your child’s genitalia with a knife than find a therapist who will divulge underlying psychological disorders. A person under 18 years of age cannot legally get a tattoo, why should they be able to consent or be allowed by their parent to undergo irreversible surgery. This is why our Arizona Legislature and Governor with SB 1138, made gender reassignment surgery for anyone under 18 years of age illegal.
In Arizona, our state legislature and Governor Ducey have been champions of pro life legislation. Arizona is one of the most pro life states in the nation. 4Tucson stands with the Center for Arizona Policy that has led the fight in passing 67 pro life bills since 1995. SB 1164, ending abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, is another step to someday ending the wide spread practice of abortion.
The 2022 Arizona legislative session is far from over. We will do our best to keep you informed of “Call to Action” alerts. When Christians get engaged in the governmental process, God puts his hand on our city, county, state and nation.
The purpose of the Government Domain is to mobilize Christians to create a culture of community involvement in the political process in our city, state and nation.
